Case for Private Financial Support
The case for private financial support of Now & Forever: The Campaign for Emporia State University is based upon four guiding principles.
First, higher education in America is changing.
- Twenty-first century students are tech-savvy, technologically-empowered and expect convenience, quality and value.
- Students today must have high-value degrees. It’s no longer enough just to have a diploma without a high-value skill set.
- Public regional universities must compete for students, private gifts and local private support to survive in a fiercely competitive environment.
- The general public is growing increasingly frustrated with rising tuition, rising student debt, rising length of time to graduation/completion, and low job placement rates, retention rates, and graduation rates.
Second, Kansas is clear about its expectations for public higher education and its vision for the future. The Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) has approved Foresight 2020, a 10-year strategic agenda for the state’s public higher education system. Foresight 2020 sets long-range achievement goals that are measurable, reportable, and ensures the state’s higher education system meets Kansans’ expectations. By design, each Now & Forever Campaign priority slated for private investment will advance the Foresight 2020 strategic agenda and has a straight-line impact to increased enrollment, retention, graduation and employment rates.
Third, the State of Kansas is rich in natural resources, industrial competencies and entrepreneurship, and its economic future relies on an educated citizenry. Furthermore, Emporia, Kansas, is uniquely located geographically and is well-positioned to attract students regionally who desire the quality of a private school education at the fair cost of a public institution.
And, finally, Emporia State University has been changing lives since 1863. Over 60,000 Emporia State alumni live across the globe, many of whom were the first in their family to attend college. Thousands upon thousands of these Emporia State graduates have achieved profound professional success. Under the leadership of Emporia State’s 17th University President Allison D. Garrett, and in partnership with our alumni and the community of Emporia, Emporia State is poised to take a quantum leap forward.
